3 Tips to Avoid the Freshman 15

The “Freshman 15” is a phrase used to describe the amount of weight gained by students during their first year at college. Some students find that they gain even more than 15 lbs. by overeating in the dining halls and not exercising regularly. There is hope, however to avoid this dreadful weight gain.



Often, college dining halls are designed as buffets. There is an unlimited supply of all sorts of foods at your disposal, but if you aren’t cautious you can end up overeating. It’s important to remember that everything is good in moderation. If you want that hamburger or the pizza, go for it, but don’t eat too much of it or eat it every day. Mix up your breakfast, lunch and dinner routine, so you have a variety of choices in your diet.

As students, your tuition includes your FREE membership for the recreation center, so why not use it? Most campus recreation centers offer programs such as, intramural and club sports, group exercise classes, personal trainers, rock climbing walls, aquatics activities and so much more. It is very easy to get involved and stay active, so visit your campus Rec asap.


If you are trying to watch your weight and stay  healthy, just drink in moderation and remember that beer or any kind of alcohol will not help you lose weight. Plus, if you’re under the age of 21 you shouldn’t be drinking anyway.

If you’re mindful of what you put into your body and squeeze at least 30 minutes of physical activity into your daily schedule your body will appreciate it in the long run. You only get one body, so take care of it while you can and make the most of your college experience because those four years go by so fast!
