Protective Styles for Women in Fitness

Black women are wearing their hair natural more than ever in 2019. Gone are the days of the creamy crack and heat damage. With so many natural hair products sold at beauty supply stores it can be so easy to become a product junkie. Going natural has its perks, but it also has its downside, too.
When it comes to working out everyone knows that the humidity and sweat can affect your curls. Knowing the right products for your hair type will help seal in moisture that you need while working out. Today we want to highlight three DFW naturalistas that share some of their favorite protective styles to wear when they hit the gym or dance studio.

What made you want to go natural?

Honestly, I saw it on my aunt & cousins and absolutely loved their curl pattern. I wanted to see how going natural would make my curls look because it made theirs look so defined, like a true BLACK QUEEN!

What made you want to go natural?

I went natural because my mom was no longer paying for my hair after college.

What are some of your favorite protective styles to wear while working out?

Since the summer, I’ve been wearing a lot of braids for low maintenance but I’m trying to embrace my natural little fro for a little bit now!

What is your favorite form of fitness?

My favorite type of fitness is weight training! I love the look my body has now since transitioning into less cardio and focusing more on training with weights!

What made you want to go natural?

I went natural because relaxers were not working for my hair. It was what I needed to do to have healthier hair.

What are some of your favorite protective styles to wear while working out?

I love my hair but I am in no way a style expert, so protective styles are my go-to. I’m a fan of twists, braids, and crochets. The easier, the better.  Protective styles hep me to minimize excuses on days that I may not want to go work out.

What is your favorite form of fitness?

My favorite form of fitness right now is lifting. I love Body Pump, which is a low weight, high repetition class. It has motivated me to get more into lifting heavier weights in order to strengthen my body, which is something I would not have considered a year ago.
