Why You Need a Break From Social Media

Social media breaks are needed because it’s not healthy to obsess over what other people are doing online. Many people look at social media and compare themselves to others instead of realizing they have their own blessings to be grateful for. Aside from the comparisons that comes along with social media, our society spends way too much time on our phones! Do you ever think what you could’ve done to be productive during the hours you spend scrolling? If you have goals of making a fitness transformation, starting a business or even growing your relationship with Christ the time you spend on social media can be spent doing those things. iPhones allow you to check your screen time, which shows how much time you spend on certain apps on your phone. iPhones also allow you to set time limits on your phones, too. This is helpful when you only want to designate certain time to being on social media. Other reasons you need a break from social media include caring for your mental health, cultivating genuine friendships and learning to live in the moment.

Social media causes you to neglect your mental health

The more you scroll, the more you create false narratives of what you should be doing based on people you see online. “Group Think” is a huge result of social media. Social media has given a voice to so many people and although some of it can be positive, other parts of it can be negative. Learn to be your own person for you and not for the likes of other people. Furthermore, when you give social media a break it helps you to think more clearly and make sound decisions based on truth.

Social media causes you to neglect your friends

Just because you watch your friends stories and like their posts on social media doesn’t mean you’re connecting with them. Let’s go back to the days when you had to connect with people in person to find out what’s going on with them. If your friends are far away, use your phone to call them on FaceTime them. Take time to actually ask how they’re doing or even send a text. These things may seem small, but they make a huge difference in letting your friend know you care about them and their well-being.

Social media causes you to not live in the moment

Anytime we’re at a special event, we are so quick to pull out our phones and film. Now, it’s okay to record a little clip here and there for memories, but to record a full concert or special moments with friends is just too much! Live in the moment and enjoy the time you have enjoying life. It’s nice to look back in your phone and see the different things you’ve done through pictures and videos, but it’s even better to have those moments stored away in your brain. Its those types of things that you remember for the rest of your life that can help shape you into the person you want to be!

Ultimately, social media is never going away, but it doesn’t have to run your life. Take breaks to get back on track and keep your mental health in check. Check on your besties and learn to live in the moment because we only get one life to live. If you have to ease yourself away from social media set timers on your phone to begin with until you’re ready to go days without it. It’s okay to set your phone down and explore this beautiful, big world!
