In our recent posts we’ve highlighted some incredible women in the DFW Fitness community. However, it wouldn’t be a true Black History month if we didn’t highlight some of the incredible men in the DFW Fitness community, too. Baylore Walker, is a fitness trainer and gym owner. He’s a graduate from the University of Texas at Arlington where he received a B.S. in Exercise Science. If we’re sitting here a year from now celebrating what a great year it’s been for you with your business, what did you achieve?
One year from now, we’ll be celebrating our gym, Skybox Fitness Lab being open for a year. I’d also like to think that we’ll be celebrating our debt free fitness facility, which we engineered with our own resources (money, intellectual property, physical property, and network). This process took us less than 2 months to scale and open, which we discussed in November 2019 on Instagram.
Who is your role model and why?
I have two role models, my mom and myself. I know that second sounds weird, but I’ll circle back around to it. My mom, is my role model because of her tenacity in business. She’s always playing a superhero role in my life. I would consider myself my role model because my mindset has separated me from a life of settling. I’ve had the ability to re-create my thoughts into something positive when my environment should have made me do differently.
What made you get into fitness?
I’ve always been into the realm of Fitness because of my high activity level in sports. When I tore my ACL for the second time that led me down a path of physical rehabilitation. I wanted to understand why it happened, and how I could prevent another devastating injury like this from reoccurring. These life experiences shaped me into becoming a fitness trainer.
What advice would you give to someone who doesn’t know where to start their fitness journey?
I would just say find credible help. Reach out to some REAL professionals, or research some case studies regarding what you want to learn about. Search Google, read books on fitness, and start doing your homework on things that intrigue you. This could be along the lines of weight loss, injury prevention, injury rehabilitation, coronary heart disease, fitness nutrition, etc.
What is Your Ambition?
My ambition will always be the people around me. Rather it’s repaying the people who took care of me growing up, or proving the naysayers wrong. I believe you can be inspired by people who have made a positive impact in your life, and people who chose/attempt to play a dark role in your life.
How did you get your idea or concept for the business?
My business partner and I built our vision based on a community who already supported and believed in us. We chose our facilities name, mission, and vision based on who our clients were.
What is unique about your business?
The diversity of our business is what makes Skybox Fitness Lab unique. Anybody who walks into Skybox will feel a sense of acceptance. We offer a wide range of services, and we have a diverse line of fitness professionals to match. If health and fitness is what you’re looking for, it doesn’t matter who you are, how you look, what you do, we can help.
How can your business help make the world a better place?
I like start at one place at a time. So, starting in our community first, then across the state, then across the country, and then in the world. Everything starts in the community first, so once you gain trust and approval from those who see your vision first hand, they will lift you up to a new level.
